Generating PDF files

PDF must be generated in version 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 or 1.7. It is not allowed to use JPEG 2000 compression. Please avoid JPEG compression - the resulting compression artifacts will be clearly visible on the printed sheets.
 

Color Management

ICC profiles are used to correctly convey and translate color information between devices. Their correct configuration is the only way to ensure proper conversion and transfer of information - for example, from the RGB space of a digital camera to the RGB space of a monitor, allowing images to display correctly on screen. For ICC profiles used with printing presses, their role is simply to convert the RGB values in a graphic design into the narrower CMYK space of the printing press. For this reason, such profiles should not be embedded in the files themselves, but only selected within the application performing the conversion. In Adobe Photoshop, for example, the AdobeRGB space (or another defined RGB working space) is converted to CMYK, which is then reproduced by the press on the given paper/material. Therefore, in Color Settings, the CMYK working space selected should be, for example, ISO Coated v2 300% (ECI) for coated papers. If a different substrate/material is used, the corresponding profile for that substrate should be used instead.
 

Setting up the PostScript printer

To obtain correct files for submission to print, please make the following settings: in the printer menu, under Printing Preferences - Advanced - TrueType Font, change the default setting from Substitute with Device Font to Download as Softfont. Below that, change the Send PostScript Error Handler setting to NO. Under Device Settings - Font Substitution Table, all fonts should be marked: Don't Substitute.

Setting up Adobe Acrobat Distiller

1. Under Default Settings, we recommend selecting Press Quality. This can serve as the basis for further configuration.
2. Then go into the detailed configuration by selecting the Settings tab - Change the Adobe PDF
3. For example, select the Compatibility option Acrobat 7.0 (PDF 1.6)
4. Under Images, you can decide whether to downsample bitmap resolution. Please note that to maintain high print quality, this setting should be no lower than 300 dpi. The resolution threshold above which downsampling occurs, and the sampling method used, depend on individual preferences and requirements.
5. Under Fonts, enable Embed All Fonts. Below that, under If embedding fails, select Cancel Job. This setting is very important, because if fonts are not embedded and are not installed on the RIP, they may be replaced with an incorrect substitute font (different typeface, mismatched character set, or incorrect language characters). Note that when preparing PDF files by converting from a PostScript file, fonts must also be correctly set to load into the file.
6. Under Color - Adobe Color Settings - Settings, select None. In the Color Management Policies menu, choose Leave Color Unchanged. This prevents an ICC profile from being embedded in the file.

The settings described above (Acrobat Distiller) also apply when creating PDF files in other graphics applications such as InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, or CorelDraw.
